Everything we do
Sustainability at our Heart
At South Farm, we are dedicated to serving both the wedding sector and our community in a sustainable manner. We are committed to continually reducing our carbon footprint and introducing new environmentally friendly ideas whenever possible. Here are some of our key sustainability initiatives.

Our chickens supply all our eggs and our smallholding provides around 70% of our fruit and veg – all grown using organic principles

We only use biodegradable straws, refillable toiletries and glass for drinking water and we sort and recycle as much as we can

We use low energy appliances, lighting, EV chargers and our own solar array which provides a significant proportion of our electricity

We have planted over 1000 indigenous trees, heritage orchards and kilometres of new hedgerow providing a haven for wildlife

We offer fully plant-based, vegetarian and gluten-free menus as well as organic, vegan and English wine options

Our borehole water is used to keep our lawns green year round, irrigate our crops & flush our toilets
Now and the future
South Farm’s Sustainable Mission and Goals
Our labour of love over the last fifty years, has transformed South Farm from a barren site with just two trees into a stunning eco-friendly wedding venue, with lovingly converted Grade II listed barns, a pretty farmhouse, thriving meadows and gardens, and an organic smallholding. Looking ahead in our Cambridgeshire outdoor wedding venue we will continue to expand our sustainability efforts — with the addition of solar energy, the continued expansion of our green initiatives and our commitment to supporting biodiversity – ensuring magical, sustainable weddings that don’t cost the earth.
The Beginning
The Paxman family bought South Farm, a derelict & abandoned 16th-century Grade II listed farmhouse & collection of elm framed barns nestled in nine acres with just two trees on site. Over the next three years, they lovingly restored the farmhouse and barns and began an extensive planting scheme creating diverse wildlife habitats around the farm and gardens.

Regenerating the Farm
During the next two decades, the gardens flourished, and the family embraced the sustainable values that would form the ethos of South Farm, creating a kitchen garden to feed family and friends, a reed-bed system to manage wastewater and a borehole water supply for irrigation. A quirky menagerie of rare breed animals was also established
The Wedding Vision
Facing risk of the collapse of some of the historic barns, a partnership was formed between Philip, James and Christine. The vision – to open South Farm as a wedding venue. Change of use and planning permission allowed us to launch an ambitious restoration project, transforming the Old Dairy, saving the fragile Tudor Barn, and constructing a state-of-the-art catering kitchen to support an exciting new chapter.

The First Celebration
South Farm opened its doors to weddings, hosting 40 in the first year alone. Wedding guests enjoyed fruit and vegetables fresh from the garden. This early focus on homegrown, seasonal food sparked South Farm’s ‘Field to Fork’ ethos that thrives today.
Field to Fork
As wedding bookings grew, the ‘Old Paddock’ was developed into the beginnings of our organic smallholding, allowing us to continue feeding guests with homegrown produce wherever possible and making us one of the first serious on-site ‘Field to Fork’ catering operations in the UK.

Expanding the Dream
We doubled the size of South Farm by buying 11 acres of adjoining land. The expansion enabled the organic smallholding to increase to around 10 acres, meaning more homegrown fruit & vegetables, more rare breed animals and more home-laid eggs! With conservation in mind, we created orchards, ponds, ‘The Arboretum’ and wildflower areas. The ‘Farm Barn’ and more polytunnels were built to support the increased farming efforts.
Our Green Values
With sustainability always at our heart, we continued to reinvest in South Farm improving our conservation efforts by moving to low energy and 100% green energy options, installing EV chargers, growing roses for our own confetti and planting a tree for every wedding hosted. We recycle wherever we can. Our fully electric vintage milk floats help us set up for wedding days in true quirky South Farm style.

Soil to Soul
We grow around 250 different varieties of fruit, veg and herbs and feed more people with homegrown food than any other business we know, on average supplying 60-70% of our own fruit and veg and all our own eggs. Behind the scenes, we turn our food and oil waste into green gold: biodiesel, biomethane, electricity, and fertiliser. Great food starts with great soil, and we enrich our fields the natural way – using horse manure from our neighbours’ paddocks.
Team Green
Our ‘Sustainability Council’ was formed to ensure that every part of the business is focussed on making greener choices, from day-to-day practices and purchasing decisions to sustainable wedding guidance for our couples and their guests, whose choices make a huge difference to the impact of each day at South Farm. We aim to continually improve the sustainability of our business to positively impact the local and wider environment.

Powering our Journey to Net Zero
We installed 360 solar panels with battery storage to optimise the benefit, allowing South Farm to generate a significant proportion of its own electricity, drastically reducing our carbon footprint, and showing that we can run a successful and responsible business. Our green mission continues apace with us scrapping gas usage and going fully electric from 2026, further reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
