Creative Ways To Incorporate Pets In Your Wedding

Pets are an important part of the family – they are known as ‘man’s best friend’ after all. So, we don’t blame you if you’d like an imaginative way to incorporate your furry friend into your big day. Imagine exchanging vows under the dappled shade of trees, the beauty of South Farm’s Hertfordshire countryside providing a picture-perfect backdrop. Now think of your pet – tail wagging, dressed to impress – proudly escorting you down the aisle. For many couples, including your pet in your wedding is a no-brainer. It’s a heart-warming way to add a personal touch to your special day.

With a recent survey by The Travel Wedding Company revealing that one-third of Gen-Z respondents wish to involve their pets in their wedding, and a study showing 71% of dog owners would prioritise their pets over some guests, it’s clear the trend is here to stay.

So, if you’re wondering how to include pets in your wedding, we’re here to help. At South Farm, we understand the magic of sharing life’s milestones with your furry friends, which is why we’re excited to help you discover the best ways to include pets in your wedding day.

Choosing the Right Role for Your Pet

Every pet’s personality is different, and their role in your ceremony should reflect that. From being the star of the show to a subtle but meaningful presence, there’s a perfect part for every creature. You just need to know how to incorporate pets in your wedding.

Ring Bearer

A well-trained dog (or even a cat!) can carry the rings down the aisle in a custom pouch or tiny basket. Listen out for the gasps of delight from your guests as your loyal companion pads down the aisle. For dogs with a talent for following commands, this can be a truly memorable moment. Go one step further and purchase a customised ring bearer pillow with your pet’s face embroidered to make it extra special.

Flower Dog

If your furry friend is more of a free spirit, why not let them lead the way as a flower dog? With a floral collar or a basket of petals attached to their harness, they can scatter flowers as they walk ahead of the wedding party.

Guest of Honour

For pets who prefer a quieter role, designating them as a ‘Guest of Honour’ can be just as meaningful. Reserve a cosy spot for them at the ceremony or drinks reception, complete with their own personalised blanket or cushion. A stress-free way to incorporate pets in your wedding.

Pets’ Wedding Attire

No wedding outfit is complete without the perfect accessories, and your pet’s attire should be no exception. Dressing up your pet in wedding-appropriate clothing or accessories can enhance their involvement in the celebration.

Custom Outfits

From miniature tuxedos to custom gowns to match your bridesmaids, there are countless ways to dress your pet for the occasion. Tailored outfits ensure they’re comfortable while looking adorable, and are a simple way to know how to include pets in your wedding.

Floral Accessories & Collars

For fussier pets or a more understated look, floral collars or decorative harnesses can add a touch of romance. Incorporate artificial flowers to hold up against wear and tear, or even a simple bow tie can be customised in your wedding colours. These accessories can also be matched to your bouquet for a cohesive theme.

If you decide to try real flowers or plants as your pet’s accessories, do your research beforehand to ensure they aren’t toxic to pets.

Creative Ceremony Ideas

Incorporating pets into the actual ceremony is a touching way to symbolise their importance in your life together although, for civil ceremonies, you need to check your ideas with the Registrars first.

Personalised Vows

Why not include your pet in your vows? A simple mention of their role in your love story or a promise to care for them as a family can be a deeply emotional moment. You can also use your pet to highlight good qualities in your partner, such as drawing parallels between their traits and the loyalty or love of a dog.

Pet Rituals

Some couples choose to include symbolic acts involving their pets, such as a paw print ceremony. This involves creating a keepsake art piece with your pet’s paw print alongside your handprints, capturing the bond you all share together.

Fun Photo Opportunities

Pets add a sense of spontaneity and joy to wedding photography. Whether they’re playful, regal, or mischievous, their presence can lead to unforgettable shots.

Professional Pet Photographers

Hiring a photographer experienced with pets ensures they know how to capture your furry friend’s best angles. Pre-wedding photoshoots, engagement sessions, or candid moments during the big day all become extra special when your pet is involved.

South Farm’s stunning gardens, barns, and meadows provide the ideal setting for these magical photos. Whether it’s your dog frolicking among the wildflowers or your cat lounging on a sunny patch, these snapshots will be treasured forever.

Handling Logistics and Considerations

Including your pet in your wedding takes a bit of planning to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Pet-Friendly Venue

South Farm is proud to be a pet-friendly wedding venue in Hertfordshire, welcoming well-behaved dogs into our outdoor spaces, Farmhouse and Old Dairy. While they’re not allowed in indoor areas like the Tudor Barn, accommodation or carpeted spaces, our beautiful gardens, open-air locations and terracotta tiled Old Dairy are perfect for their participation. Assistance dogs are, of course, welcome in all locations. We do find that it works best for your pet to come for the ceremony and/or drinks reception and then be collected by a friend / pet sitter after this time. At South Farm we like to look after the best interests of humans and cherished pets alike!

Prepare Your Pet for the Big Day

Practice makes paw-perfect! Familiarise your pet with the venue beforehand and rehearse their role to build confidence. It is key to assign a trusted friend or handler to keep an eye on them during the event, ensuring they’re comfortable and stress-free.
