At Violets and Velvet, we are deeply committed to promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship through every aspect of our business. We believe in the power of nature to bring beauty and joy to people’s lives, and we are dedicated to ensuring that this beauty is cultivated with care and respect for the planet.
Floral Foam
We gave up using this years ago. Oasis floral foam is extremely bad for the environment. Floral foam is not biodegradable and can exist in the environment for hundreds, thousands, or millions of years. You can get compostable alternative to floral foam like TerraBrick, Fibre Floral or Agra Wool and we also use chicken wire, reusable vials and vessels to create stunning displays which can be dismantled and used again and again.
Waste Collection through COM:POST
We have began to work with com:post which means almost 100% of our green waste is turned into compost, helping us offset the carbon emissions that are currently a huge issue for the floristry industry. Working with a number of partners, our innovative closed loop system enables consumers and florists to turn their cut flowers into compost that will go onto grow future flowers and food.
Eco-Friendly Sourcing
In British growing season, we prioritise sourcing flowers and plants from local, sustainable farms that practice organic and environmentally responsible growing methods. By reducing our reliance on imports, we minimize our carbon footprint while supporting local growers who share our passion for eco-conscious cultivation. Whenever possible, we choose seasonal blooms that are grown without harmful chemicals or pesticides, ensuring that our arrangements are not only beautiful but also environmentally kind.
Waste Reduction
At Violets and Velvet, we are committed to reducing waste throughout our operations. We practice mindful design, ensuring that every arrangement is crafted with minimal waste. We recycle and reuse materials such as packaging, ribbons, and vases to further limit our environmental impact.
Sustainable Packaging
We are working towards eliminating single-use plastics by opting for biodegradable or reusable packaging materials. Our bouquets are always wrapped in eco-friendly paper and bags. We encourage our customers to return and reuse vases, promoting a circular economy. We are always seeking innovative ways to reduce plastic use and make sustainability a natural part of every purchase.
Energy Efficiency
We aim to lower emissions associated with deliveries by offering carbon-neutral delivery options and optimising routes to decrease fuel use.
At Violets and Velvet, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that by embracing environmentally responsible practices, we can not only deliver beautiful, fresh flowers but also contribute to a thriving, sustainable world for future generations.
As a gardener, I take inspiration from nature. I like my designs to feel organic, but considered and using flowers that can be found side by side in a real life garden. Colour is a huge inspiration also and I love clients that want to play with this a little. Texture is so important to me also and we love to use foliage that enhances the flowers. In my opinion the foliage we use is just as significant as the flowers. Being a florist is more than a job for me. I didn’t start out as one, although it was always there in the back of my mind, my plan B. I believe you take a bit of knowledge from every job you do and my background in costume and textiles has definitely given me some skills that I use when designing floral arrangements.
We love to get to know our couples, so meeting up for a cup of tea and a chat is always the best way to start proceedings. From here, I put together a bespoke and descriptive proposal for the flowers which will always start with your ideas.
