There’s a wonderful wedding trend happening – it’s the simple but stunning draw of the great outdoors that’s capturing the eye of the newly engaged!!

After all who doesn’t want their wedding to take place in a stunning backdrop with beautiful grounds and gardens and the added benefit of many different stylish indoor spaces too!

These days we are all thinking a lot more about our carbon footprint. For environmentally friendly couples searching for a wedding venue that ticks boxes in terms of facilities and values there is so much to consider.

So, why get married at a farm venue…

Well firstly what’s not to love about wedding day photos in meadows full of wildflowers, by pretty ponds, or in orchards with beautiful blossom canopies.  But that’s not all – at South Farm we grow our own food in our many acres of farmland. Our polytunnels and paddocks are full of ripening vegetables adding a colourful backdrop to your unique wedding photographs. Our charming herb and kitchen gardens are filled with fragrance and colour with exquisitely planned borders.  The formal gardens offer so many stunning photo opportunities including pretty hedgerow cut-outs, a lovely bridge over the pond full of waterlilies and leafy trees for shady spots. With so many lovingly converted barn buildings offering stunning indoor spaces for your wedding meal and evening party you really are spoilt for choice both indoor and out!

Even our South Farm accommodation is uniquely eco with a charming collection of restored romany wagons and gorgeous guest bedrooms all beautiful decorated in farm heritage style.

Uniquely the barnyard hosts an eclectic mix of animals– yes you really can have pictures on your wedding day with the chicks, sheep and piglets! There’s also something quite special and quirky about selecting a pair of beautiful wedding shoes plus a pair of wedding wellies or blinged-up converse to wander through the paddocks should it take your fancy!

Lots of enterprising farmers and land-owners are spotting this trend and opening up a field and offering couples the chance to set up a marquee for their wedding celebrations. Just bear in mind that many farm venues are often available on a dry-hire basis only.  Which would mean you need to add to your planning list the hire of tables, chairs, linen, cutlery, crockery and of course source all the drinks you wish to serve and a dab catering team to cook and serve your wedding breakfast.

And, don’t forget with an outdoor farm wedding venue you are also open to the elements…so making sure there is enough inside space for all your guests if a rain shower appears is vital… And fingers crossed that won’t happen but it is something to consider, along with how you and your guests will arrive at your venue, and stay dry and mud-free!

At South Farm you have a beautiful farm wedding venue in Hertfordshire with all these facilities already in place and more! Our pristine gravel driveway and paved paths offer an easy route around our gardens and courtyards. From an environmentally friendly point of view we think we have it all covered too! With our own sustainable water source allowing us to keep our gardens beautifully green even in the dry Summer months, our home-grown food meaning less food miles, low packaging, refrigeration costs and delicious field to fork menus, our wonderful wedding backdrop ticks all the sustainable boxes too.

We take pride in regularly upgrading all that we offer and have recently installed EV charges to make it easier for those who have chosen to opt for an electric vehicle option. Our new vehicle charging stations are set at the back of our grassy carpark. At South Farm we only purchase energy from 100% green energy suppliers.

Another unique, green touch is the sustainable, bio-degradable confetti we provide for all South Farm weddings which means guests don’t need to bring their own. In the summer we even hand-pick and dry our home-grown rose petals to use in your wedding confetti!

Over the years we have planted over 1000 indigenous hardwood trees, heritage orchards and kilometres of hedgerow, creating diverse wildlife habitats. Our pretty gardens and meadows provide essential food and homes for bees and other wildlife as well as the most beautiful wedding backdrop!

But don’t just take our word for it…take a look at our eco-friendly policies here and how we always strive to be as sustainable as we possibly can.
